We have extensive experience acting in cases of blackmail and extortion, both on behalf of individuals facing investigation and prosecution, and on behalf of victims who have been the subject of unwarranted demands.
We secure the best possible results for our clients through early engagement with the police and prosecutors. This often involves taking a proactive approach, conducting our own investigations and compiling evidence to be submitted alongside written representations. When our clients find themselves involved in court proceedings, we guide and support them throughout the process. Where our clients have received threats, we are experienced in engaging with the other side, offering them a final opportunity to stop before a formal complaint is made to the police.
We have an in-depth understanding of the complex considerations that can exist in blackmail cases. Urgent action is often necessary to limit reputational damage. Thanks to our long history of acting in blackmail and extortion cases, we are uniquely placed to take quick and decisive action to protect your interests and the interests of those close to you. Where there is a risk to your security or privacy, we work closely with an extensive network of specialists who can provide additional support, bringing you peace of mind.

Our experience
Examples of our instructions include:
- Acting for the daughter of a prominent Asian business family being blackmailed by her former partner. Engaging with family lawyers and the police, resulting in the arrest and prosecution of the perpetrator.
- Successfully defending a vulnerable young woman accused of blackmail by a former associate. Following the instruction of several expert witnesses, we prepared written representations and supporting evidence demonstrating that our client was a victim of abuse perpetrated by the complainant. The prosecution was reviewed and discontinued.
- Acting for the founder of a successful start-up business being blackmailed by a family member. Providing assistance and support in reporting the blackmail to the police, as well as providing representation during an interview under caution in respect of counter-allegations faced by our client.
- Acting for a successful athlete being blackmailed by their former partner. Neutralising the threat posed by warning the perpetrator of the risk of civil and criminal action, whilst also coordinating physical and cyber security for the client.
- Successfully representing a professional accused of stabbing her husband in the back several times. Through a detailed analysis of the evidence and the instruction of an expert on causation of injury, we were able to demonstrate that our client had been falsely accused of the assault, and that she was in fact the victim of attempted ‘sextortion’ by her husband.
